Andrew Bagnall

PhD Student

Andrew was born in 1996. He obtained his integrated MChem (Hons) at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne in 2018, spending a year at Justus Liebig University Giessen as an Erasmus exchange student, where he studied bioinspired cyclam ligand systems for stabilising high oxidation state iron and nickel complexes under Pr. Siegfried Schindler. After returning to Newcastle, he did his master’s project in the fields of photochemistry and host−guest chemistry under Dr. Fabio Cucinotta, incorporating dye species into mesoporous silicas to produce optically active hybrid materials. He started his PhD project in October 2018 in the group of Dr. Vincent Artero at CEA Grenoble as an Early-Stage Researcher of the larger eSCALED project within the EU Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme (Marie Skłodowska-Curie grant agreement No 765376), with the aim of synthesising proton reduction electrocatalysts integrated onto electrodes to be used in the construction of an artificial leaf. Outside of the lab his interests include modern foreign languages, traditional British baking and archery.
